Francesco Totti has saved Roma with an injury-time penalty against Cesena to put his Serie A side into the Italian Cup semi-finals.

A struggling Roma have beaten lower-division Cesena 2-1 thanks to an injury-time penalty taken by Francesco Totti, to qualify to play an Italian Cup semi-final against city rivals Lazio.

"We got a late win thanks to our great character against a team who did not play as a Serie B side," Totti said.

"Playing with Lazio is a semi as any other and we'll do our best try to get into the final."

Serie B side Cesena played a scrappy first half at Rome's Stadio Olimpico but fell behind as Edin Dzeko deflected home in the box after missing a couple of easy chances.

Defender Kostas Manolas clashed with his goalkeeper Alisson five minutes later, allowing Luca Garritano to level with a simple tap-in. A foul from goalkeeper Federico Agliardi on Kevin Strootman led to Totti's deciding penalty.

Lazio won 2-1 at Inter Milan on Tuesday and are to face the Giallorossi in a first-leg semi on March 1, while Napoli and Juventus clash on February 28.

Second-leg games are programmed for early April with the final due for June 2 in Rome.
