Successful six minute search for fishermen

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/05/2016

Two Kiribati fisherman who had been missing for five days were found by a RNZAF search and rescue plane just six minutes after the search was launched.

The two men didn't return from a fishing trip last Friday, prompting the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand to spring into action with a P3 Orion plane leaving Whenupai on Wednesday.

"The aircraft arrived on scene at approximately 1.30pm (NZ time) and spotted the missing men waving from their boat within about six minutes," RCCNZ co-ordinator Mike Roberts said.

"The search area was obviously correct and the aircraft has made its approach from precisely the right direction."

"While there is an element of luck involved, the Orion crew have done a fantastic job. I can't recall another search being successful so quickly."

A survival pack with food, water and a radio were dropped by the Orion to the men who appeared to be in good health.

A Kiribati rescue vessel has been dispatched to pick up the two men.
