Christchurch residents are flooding a Facebook page with offers to host evacuees from the Port Hills fire.

"2 rooms available in Halswell, as well as a big back yard available for pets," Hannah Jordan posted on Thursday in a message typical of those appearing on the Evacuation housing Facebook page.

Another Facebook user, Fiona Russell, did not have a spare room to offer but says she can help with babysitting if needed.

"I work full-time but if you need to have a couple of hours after work to sort out some life admin I'd love to help. I'm experienced with kids," she wrote.

James Frost took to the page asking for help.

"Hi all, lost my home in the quakes and now lost house in the fire," he said.

"Feeling really unsettled and would be so happy if anyone had a caravan/campervan with facilities we could use for a while."

His post had attracted almost 50 comments and offers of help in one hour.

Christchurch Civil Defence recently tweeted its support for the Facebook page set up on Wednesday by user Robert Norman Read and advised those wishing to help people affected by the fires to also call 03 347 2740.
