A fire that gutted a Housing New Zealand home in south Auckland is being treated as suspicious.

Fire crews found the single-storey house on Rapson Road in Otara engulfed by flames at about 7am on Monday.

Five crews managed to get the blaze under control by 10am and investigators at the scene were now treating it as suspicious, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

No one was injured in the blaze, she said.

Neighbour Edward Johnstone told NZME he ran next door to warn the home's sleeping tenants, including four young children, to get out after spotting smoke and calling emergency services.

"Everyone was asleep. I had to bang on the whole house and try and wake them up," he said.
