The bomb squad has detonated a suspicious package in central Dunedin which was found to be inert and no threat.

Inspector Jason Guthrie says police cordons have been taken down and police are investigating how the package came to be near the vacant building on Moray Place.

A Christchurch-based New Zealand Defence Force bomb squad was called in to deal with the package.

Earlier offices and a supermarket in the area were evacuated.
