Swedish Princess gives birth to first baby

Swedish Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia, have announced the birth of a their baby boy.

Swedish Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia, have become parents to "a little boy".

"For me and my wife it's been a great day with a lot of feelings," the prince told reporters at Danderyd Hospital outside Stockholm where the baby was born at 6.28pm local time.

The newborn boy weighed almost 3.6 kilos and was 49 centimetres long, he said.

Carl Philip, 36, married the former model, 31-year-old Sofia Hellqvist, in June 2015. On marrying the prince, Hellqvist was granted the title Princess, Duchess of Varmland.

The baby boy is fifth in line to the throne, but the proud father did not announce the name of the newest addition to the royal family.

The newborn boy is King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's fifth grandchild.

Carl Philip is the second of the king and queen's three children.

Their oldest daughter is Crown Princess Victoria, and their youngest daughter is Princess Madeleine.
