His time of 21.52 seconds on Tuesday eclipsed Cameron Simpson's New Zealand mark by 0.1s and was inside the qualifying time for the world short course championships in December.

In the women's 100m individual medley final, Helena Gasson clocked one minute 00.61seconds to break the national record she set in the morning heats.

But the Rio Olympian had to settle for second behind Australian Emily Washer in 1:00.52.

Gasson has been back in the pool for only a few weeks and she said her goals for the race were to swim a personal best and to enjoy herself.

"I just want to keep all the pressure out of the competition and just enjoy it," she said.

"The Games were fun and I learned a lot but a lot of pressure came with it. So it's good to take a step back and fall back in love with the sport."
