Sydney FC have snapped up former Melbourne City midfielder Paulo Retre as the A-League champions boost stocks in readiness for a busy title defence and Asian Champions League campaign.

Coach Graham Arnold had indicated he was after one or two youngsters to build on the already-impressive depth of his record-breaking squad.

In the 24-year-old former Young Socceroo, Arnold was certain he'd found a player who could match his team's winning mentality while making a name for himself.

"He is an extremely talented young Australian player who will give us even greater competition for places, especially with a Champions League campaign on the horizon," Arnold said.

"He will improve us and he has all the qualities to be a top player in this league.

"He's a winner, which is what we like at Sydney FC, and he's hungry for the success which will come his way this season."

Retre made 54 league appearances for City across five seasons before he and the club mutually agreed to terminate the final year of his contract last week.

The last remaining Melbourne Heart squad member, he scored a single goal in City's 2-1 Melbourne derby win of December 2015.

The Sky Blues are also on the lookout for another goalkeeper after Danny Vukovic's exit to Belgian side Racing Genk left Andrew Redmayne as the only gloveman on the books.
