Tall Blacks overwhelm China

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/06/2016

The Tall Blacks have produced a big win over China, downing their hosts 98-74 in a men's basketball tournament near Shanghai.

The result made it three-from-three for the New Zealanders, who are preparing for an Olympics qualifying event in Manila in July, and it booked them a place in the semi-finals.

Rookie centre Mike Karena top-scored for the Tall Blacks with 18 points, not missing with his nine shots.

Corey Webster added 16 points, Tai Webster 13 and Isaac Fotu 10.

The Tall Blacks lead throughout almost the whole game.

They were up by 20 during the second quarter and extended that to 50-22 at half time.

Their dominance meant coach Paul Henare was able to give his bench valuable game time.

However, victory over world No.14 China, a team ranked seven places higher, was dampened by injury to skipper Mika Vukona, who coped an elbow to the head.

Vukona will be monitored during the rest day before the semi-finals.
