Tall Ferns fall to Czech Republic

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/05/2016

The Tall Ferns have ended their Four Nations tournament in China with a disappointing 56-53 loss to the Czech Republic.

Having beaten the Czechs earlier in the week, the Kiwis were optimistic they could finish their six-game schedule with a win and claim second place in the tournament.

But although the New Zealanders led 28-21 at halftime, their sub-par shooting accuracy allowed the Czechs back into the match.

The Kiwis converted just 18 from 54 two-point attempts, and could only manage two from seven from the three-point line.

This lack of scoring punch was highlighted in the final quarter, with Tall Ferns managing only 12 points.

Toni Edmondson (10 points) led the Ferns scoring effort for the fourth game out of six, but she was the only player in double figures.

Micaela Cocks and Penina Davidson scored eight apiece, with Davidson also snaring nine rebounds.

Kalani Purcell had a night to forget at the offensive end, scoring just once from 13 attempts, but redeemed her night somewhat in pulling down nine rebounds.

The Tall Ferns now head to Latvia for games against the host country on Friday and Saturday, boosted by the return of experienced campaigners Josie Stockill and Jillian Harmon.

They then travel to France for the Olympic qualifying tournament in Nantes from June 13-19.
