Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) won Illinois' Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, the Associated Press projected.

Duckworth, who represents Illinois' 8th congressional district in Chicago's northwest suburbs, was expected to easily defeat opponents Andrea Zopp and Napoleon Harris, due to a large lead in the polls and substantial campaign funding.

An Iraq War veteran who lost both of her legs in combat, Duckworth is the first disabled woman to serve in Congress, and has made veterans affairs a major part of her tenure.

Duckworth will face the incumbent, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), in the general election in November. The race, expected to be contentious, already got ugly last week, when the National Republican Senatorial Committee tastelessly blasted Duckworth for "not standing up for our veterans." Duckworth fired back with a long list of veterans-focused legislation that she has sponsored.
