Local hero Garth Tander left his best until last to top the opening practice session of the Perth Supercars round on Friday.

The 2007 Supercars champion waited until the last 60 seconds of the 45 minute session to clock 55.64 seconds on the 2.4km track.

He was 0.5 seconds quicker than fellow Holden star Jamie Whincup, while Tander's teammate James Moffat was third fastest.

Perth product Tander will hope to impress on his home track and move within striking distance of the series leaders this weekend.

Tander is sixth in the standings after three rounds, ending his 18-year association with Walkinshaw Racing and linking with Garry Rogers Motorsport this year.

Series leader Fabian Coulthard of Ford was sixth quickest while Holden veteran Craig Lowndes was eighth fastest.

Three-time Supercars champion Lowndes is looking to break back in to the winners' circle after an 18-race winless run.

He will fancy his chances at Barbagallo Raceway - Lowndes has a record 16 race wins at Perth, twice as many as next best Mark Skaife.

Defending series champion Shane van Gisbergen was 11th fastest and Ford star Scott McLaughlin 20th in opening practice.

Matt Brabham - grandson of triple Formula One champion Sir Jack - was second last in the 26-strong field after earning a last minute Supercars debut.

Brabham is a late replacement for Holden's Taz Douglas.

The second practice session starts at 1635 AEST.
