Two men who died on a tramp in the Tararuas at the weekend were originally from eastern Europe, police say.

They were Mykhalo Stepura, also known as Michael Stepura, 39, of Lower Hutt, and Pavel Pazniak, 32, of Auckland.

Both were foreign nationals, Mr Stepura having come from Ukraine and Mr Pazniak from Belarus, but had been living in New Zealand for some time.

Their bodies were found in Tararua Forest Park on Monday after the pair failed to return on Sunday from an overnight trip.

Police say they are continuing their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Post-mortem examinations were carried out Wednesday and the findings will be passed on to the coroner.
