Taupo Plains properties getting power back

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 31/08/2016

Most of the Taupo Plains properties that have been relying on generators for power after a heavy dumping of snow more than three weeks ago have been reconnected to the network supply.

Power company Unison says more than 150 of the 200 properties affected were back on their usual supply.

The company's relationship manager, Danny Gough, says the restoration effort has been significant.

"We haven't seen damage like this on our network for well over a decade," he said on Wednesday.

"The sheer weight of the snow pushed poles to the ground, broke and twisted them, as well as snapped lines."

Mr Gough said Unison crews, helped by others from around the country, had replaced more than 200 poles destroyed in the snow storm.

All going well, the remaining customers still supplied by temporary generators were expected to be back on the normal network by the end of the week.
