Tauranga police seek upturned boat's owner

A boat spotted overturned off the Bay of Plenty coast has been recovered and Tauranga police want to find its owner.

There have been no reports of boaties missing in the area and police say they are trying to work out how the craft got there.

The 5.6-meter fibreglass Sea Nymph, with the name Optimist, has a 150hp Mercury outboard motor with it.

The pilot of a light aircraft spotted the boat floating upside down 2.5 nautical miles south of Mayor Island on Tuesday.

The Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter and Waihi Coastguard carried out a search of the area but found no one.
