New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor is in the runs in English county cricket ahead of joining the Black Caps for their tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Taylor has hit an unbeaten 142 off 250 balls for Sussex against Kent in Royal Tunbridge Wells, batting for a shade under six hours on the hottest day of the year.

Sussex were dismissed for 333 at stumps on the third day of the four-day match, 242 runs behind Kent's first innings of 575.

Taylor, who came in at number four, teamed up with Luke Wright to add 114 in 34 overs either side of lunch before Kagiso Rabada broke the stand with the second new ball.

In praise of his team-mate's work ethic, Sussex opener Chris Nash, said Taylor had been brilliant for Sussex in all formats.

"He's won three T20s for us off his own back and in four-day cricket he's shown tremendous application."

Six wickets down at tea, Sussex did their utmost to bat out the final session, losing their last man in the final over of the day. Will Beer was run out by a direct hit from mid-off.

Sixty-nine Test veteran Taylor will join the Black Caps later in the week.

The first of the two Zimbabwe Tests starts in Bulawayo on July 29.
