Fire sprinklers activating overnight have forced the Te Papa Museum to close on Thursday.

Sprinklers in the foyer were set off on Wednesday night, soaking the entrance hall.

In a statement the museum says there was no fire and no people or collections were affected by the water, but the museum would remain closed while checks are carried out on the alarm system.

Firefighters helped mop up the mess.

"We expect to be back to our usual selves on Friday," the statement said.
