Tearney claims scalp in Canada

New Zealand tennis player Finn Tearney has scored one of the best wins of his career in downing the top seed in the first round of a tournament in Canada.

Tearney, ranked 388 in the world, beat Frenchman Quentin Halys, ranked 138, 2-6 6-4 6-0 in one hour 37 minutes at the hard court Challenger at Gatineau, Ottawa.

"It's great for me because I've been struggling a bit with confidence recently. So it's nice to finally get a decent win," the 25-year-old said.

He will next play the winner of the match between Canadian locals Felix Auger Aliassime (ranked 784) and Peter Polansky (164).

The tournament has a prize pool of $US75,000. ($NZ105,000).

Tearney was this week confirmed in the New Zealand Davis Cup team to play Pakistan in Christchurch next month.
