Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland (D) won Ohio's Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, The Associated Press projected.

Strickland easily defeated opponents Kelli Prather and P.G. Sittenfeld.

He served as governor from 2007 to 2011, narrowly losing re-election to current Gov. John Kasich (R), who won Ohio's GOP presidential primary on Tuesday. Strickland will attempt to unseat incumbent Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) in the general election.

Current polls show a close race, and both campaigns have begun running attack ads. Portman has amassed more money -- $12 million, compared with Strickland's $2 million.

Democrats are likely to devote great effort to the race as the party attempts to win back control of the Senate from Republicans.
