A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after an alleged assault and carjacking involving a female victim in Auckland.

Police says the 62-year-old woman suffered a serious head injury in the incident in New Lynn Mall on Thursday and was in a stable condition in Auckland Hospital.

The teenager is expected to appear in the Youth Court on Friday facing a number of charges.

Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small says the woman was approached by the alleged offender around 1.30pm while she was sitting in her parked vehicle.

An argument took place and the victim fell to the ground.

The offender then allegedly drove off in the woman's vehicle.

The victim was found by a member of the public on the ground, coming in and out of consciousness.

Det Sen Sgt Small says police then received a number of calls from the public about the woman's car being driven erratically on the South-Western Motorway.

After the car pulled into a property in Manukau, the offender fled on foot but was located shortly after.

Det Sen Sgt Roger Small says police are not looking for anybody else in relation to the incident.

But they want to speak to anyone who might have seen a 2000 blue Toyota RAV4 being driven in New Lynn and on the South-Western Motorway between 1.30pm and 3pm.
