A 17-year-old girl has been indecently assaulted while walking the family dog in Whanganui.

She was walking on Dublin Street bridge on Sunday afternoon around 3:30pm when she overtook a man who was going in the same direction, who then followed her to the under-bridge walkway.

The same man allegedly indecently assaulted her before she turned around and swore at him, and he then ran off down Somme Parade.

He's been described as being in his early-mid 20s, about 6ft 3in (1.9m) of average build with brown eyes and short brown hair, with acne scarring or freckles on his cheeks and was wearing a black t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers.

The girl said there were a number of people in the area and police would like to hear from anyone who saw a man matching the description.
