Teen fights back against would-be abductor

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/06/2016

A young woman narrowly avoided being thrown into a stranger's car in Palmerston North, by fighting back after a man grabbed her on the street.

The 17-year-old girl was waiting for a friend near the intersection with Botanical Rd at about 8.30am on Thursday when a man stopped his car nearby on Tremaine Ave and apparently tried to abduct her.

He grabbed her from behind and began pulling her backwards towards his car, police said.

However, the teen kicked him in the shin with her heel which allowed her to run off.

Detective Carl Newton said the young woman reacted quickly and prevented the incident escalating further.

"At this stage, it's difficult to know what the man's intentions were but nonetheless this behaviour is concerning."

The man is described as Maori with a roundish face, and a shaven head, police say.

He was wearing a dark long-sleeved top and dark pants.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw a navy blue station wagon, or the man described, on Tremaine Ave near Lynwood Close around the time of the incident.
