Police have used spikes to end a 13-year-old boy's joy ride through Waikato in a stolen car.

The teenager led police on a chase after they attempted to pull his car over in the Hamilton suburb of Dinsdale at 3.40am because he was driving with no lights on, a spokeswoman says.

He then attempted to evade police by driving onto the Waikato Expressway until crashing in Ngaruawahia where spikes had been laid.

Police arrested two people over the chase, which lasted less than 10 minutes.

The teenager was driving a car stolen in Hamilton and no injuries have been reported, the spokeswoman said.
