The family of terminally ill prisoner Vicki Letele have won their fight for her to be released on compassionate grounds.

The Parole Board says it has approved her release on Thursday after having received a request the previous day from the Corrections Department to consider the case.

Corrections tweeted that its thoughts were with Letele, her children and her family, adding: "We're grateful to the NZPB for their urgent consideration."

Letele, 35, is eight months into a sentence of three years and two months for a $500,000 mortgage fraud.

The mother of three is up for parole next April, but has stomach cancer and has been given less than six months to live.

Corrections chief executive Ray Smith wrote to the Parole Board with his recommendation.

"I consider that Vicki's circumstances meet the grounds for a compassionate release as she is seriously ill and is unlikely to recover," the letter said.
