THE DEFENCE FORCE REVAMP AT A GLANCE

The just-released Defence White Paper sets out a 15-year plan to modernise the defence force. It comes with a $20 billion price tag.

OUT WITH THE OLD

* The air force's ageing Boeing 757, C-130 Hercules and P-3K2 Orion aircraft will all be replaced

* The navy's ANZAC frigates will all be replaced

* No details about what the aircraft or frigates will be replaced with, when they will be replaced, or how much it will cost

IN WITH THE NEW

* The navy will get a new ice-strengthened offshore patrol vessel suitable for patrolling the EEZ and the Southern Ocean

* A more capable and versatile ship will replace the naval tanker HMNZS Endeavour

* A single vessel that can support operations from sea onto land will replace the dive ship HMNZS Manawanui and hydrographic ship HMNZS Resolution

* New cyber support capability will be developed to defence force networks, platforms and people

* More defence intelligence personnel

* Digitisation of the army's battlefield navigation and communication systems

* Continued replacement, upgrade and introduction of special forces equipment

* Continued replacement and upgrades of land combat weapons

* Improve the protection provided by the light armoured vehicle fleet.
