NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 13/07/2016

HOW MUCH IS A UNIVERSITY EDUCATION WORTH?

THE STUDY:

* 6000 students who graduated in 2011 answered 600 survey questions each in 2014

* Questions covered employment, health, social life and other areas

JOBS:

* Unemployment for grads was only 2.7 per cent in 2014 - compared to 5.7 nationally

* About two thirds had jobs related to their field of study

* Pay about the same as national median income for same experience

* 21 per cent said they didn't think the time and money had been worth it

OTHER STUFF:

* The average student loan was about $10,000 to $15,000

* 89 per cent said they were healthy and only 7 per cent smoked

* 43 per cent of international students stayed in New Zealand

* Graduates were more likely to vote in national elections (84 per cent vs 80 per cent)

WHAT NEXT?

* The researchers will conduct the same study at least twice more to follow students up to 10 years from graduation
