Thefts from unlocked homes

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/07/2016

Someone has been stealing handbags, wallets and cash from the homes of elderly people while they've been pottering in their gardens.

It's happened twice in Te Rapa, Hamilton, and police believe the same person is responsible.

On both occasions, the homeowner had been outside in the garden and left the house unlocked, Detective Paul Slater says.

He's reminding homeowners to always lock up and is asking anyone with information to come forward.

He says people should lock their house even if they're having a rest or doing something that needs a lot of concentration, such as studying or sewing.
