Thieves used a hammer to smash the thick glass of a display case in the shop window of Polished Diamonds in the central city about 4am on Tuesday.

"I think these are the same people that stole Kim Kardashian's jewellery," he joked.

No arrests have been made but police are looking over CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

Around the same time of the jewellery theft a man was arrested after allegedly stealing a number of items from furniture hire store Display Works.

A few hours earlier, about 2.30am, three people attempted to steal cigarettes from BP Mairehau but walked away with just a handful of chocolates as they couldn't break into the cabinet.

Across town around the same time a group of youths stole a till from Kendall Food Centre at Burnside, which has previously been targeted by armed robbers.

A police spokeswoman told NZ Newswire there didn't appear to be a link between the burglaries.
