Thousands of privacy inquiries submitted

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 28/11/2016

Privacy Commissioner John Edwards says he responded to nearly 8000 public inquiries during the last financial year and dealt with nearly all of them within six months.

In his just-released annual report, Mr Edwards says 7783 inquiries came in and he finished the year with only nine per cent of complaints files older than six months - and only three per cent older than nine months.

The theme of his report is establishing trust through accountability and transparency, and highlights the ways the office helped build that trust.

Highlights of the year were:

* Working with agencies to develop breach notification processes and transparent reporting

* Advising the public sector on ways to use "big data" in ways that doesn't compromise individual privacy

* Assisting with information-sharing agreements around vulnerable children and gangs

* Working with agencies on informal information sharing - finding ways to share information within existing law.
