Thousands without internet in South Island

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/04/2016

About 2000 people in the South Island may be left without internet connections until the afternoon after the network was accidentally damaged.

A Spark spokeswoman said it appeared powerline workers had cut or damaged the fibre network near Kaiapoi at about 8am on Thursday.

Two cellphone towers in the area had also been knocked off the grid by the accident, she said.

She said it could take until the afternoon to fix the problem, although the extent of the damage wasn't yet clear.
