A third person has died after a house fire in Rangitaiki near Taupo.

A woman and an infant died in the fire which broke out about 3am on Friday, and a man died in hospital from his injuries during the afternoon. He had earlier been flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition, police say.

The house is on a farm on the Napier to Taupo Highway and a scene examination will continue on Saturday.

Police and Victim Support are providing support to the family of the three people who died, as well as the other family members present.

Two others were hospitalised with moderate injuries.

A nine-months pregnant mother, her male partner, their eight-year-old special-needs son, the mother's teenage sister and the sister's six-month-old infant lived at the property, according to Fairfax.

Police have declined to speculate on the cause of the blaze.
