© SNPA State Highway 1 at Huntly has been reopened after a crash in which three people were killed.

A collision between a truck and car around 2.40pm on Monday led to the closure of the road next to the Waikato town.

The three who died were among five people in the car. Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter said the two others - a woman and a nine-year-old girl - were taken to Waikato Hospital after both were treated at the scene for multiple injuries. One was described as being in a critical condition, the other as stable. Police said the truck driver was uninjured.

They have not yet released details about the deceased, saying they are working to confirm their identities and to contact next-of-kin.

NZME has reported that the three are understood to be a father and his two sons.
