The holiday weekend road toll has risen to 11 following a horrific crash in Northland, which claimed the lives of three people and seriously injured three others.

Early reports indicate a 4WD left the road and hit a tree at 6.45pm on Monday.

Baylys Coast Road in Parore is blocked and diversions are in place.

Eleven people have died during the Queen's Birthday weekend, exceeding 2015's tally of five.

A motorcyclist died in a crash in the North Island town of Huntly on Monday, while two people died as a result of a head-on crash near Mt Bruce in the Wairarapa on Sunday.

There have also been single-fatality crashes in Otago, the Bay of Plenty, north Canterbury, south Auckland and the King Country.

The official holiday road toll period started at 4pm on Friday and runs until 6am on Tuesday.
