Police are trying to identify three foreigners killed in a crash with a truck on an icy Desert Road that also left one critically injured.

The truck driver was shaken but uninjured during the accident on State Highway 1 at about 7.30am on Monday.

Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said it appeared the car, travelling north, crossed into the path of the southbound truck.

"Unfortunately, three passengers in the car have died and the driver has been taken to hospital in a critical condition," he said.

"The Desert Road is notorious for changing conditions and drivers should take extreme caution in the area."

Snr Sgt Troy told Radio NZ police were working with embassies to identify the dead and contact their families.

All four appeared to be in their 20s, he said.

A police spokeswoman said details of their identifies are expected to be released on Tuesday.

Monday's road conditions were described as treacherous with patches of ice and snow falling.

The conditions have been blamed for a number of separate minor crashes around the Central Plateau region and prompted a warning from police for people to avoid non-essential travel.
