A rock climber has spent three hours waiting for rescue after falling several metres at a remote spot in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

The 35-year-old suffered a serious leg injury in the fall at Omaio on Sunday.

"Due to no phone coverage he lay on the rocks for about three hours before someone found him," Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter pilot Todd Dunham said.

The helicopter was able to land nearby and the man was flown to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.
