All three New Zealanders have been shown the exit door on the first day of the men's squash world championships in Cairo.

The trio couldn't overcome difficult draws, although top-ranked Kiwi Paul Coll underlined his ability by pushing French world No.2 Gregory Gaultier into a fourth set.

Coll, ranked 34th, fell 11-6 12-10 6-11 11-8 to Gaultier in a match which was surprisingly tight.

Campebll Grayson, ranked 42nd, was unlucky to draw fourth seeded Englishman Nick Matthew and was also competitive in going down 11-7 6-11 11-4 13-11

English-based Kiwi Lance Beddoes, who was a qualifier for the main draw, lost 11-4 11-4 11-5 to Hong Kong's Leo Au, whose world ranking of 30th was 72 places higher.
