Three people in their 60s were tied up for three hours in what has been described as a terrifying home invasion in Christchurch.

A couple were initially believed to be the victims of the attack in Harewood on Monday morning, but police now say there were three people in the house.

Money was believed to be the offender's target.

"The three people are in their 60s and have been through a very traumatic experience, although they have no physical injuries," said Detective Simon Keith.

"They were tied up for approximately three hours, and while they were not physically harmed, it was a terrifying time for them with the threat of violence present the whole time."

Police are hunting for a solidly built Caucasian man, between 30 and 40 years old, about 1.8m tall.

They are also appealing for sightings of a blue 2007 Toyota Vitz, registration HFD 599, which was stolen from the property and later found in Casebrook.
