NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 24/05/2016

An earthquake and a spectacular thunderstorm have kept many awake in the lower North Island over Tuesday night.

Lightning lit up the skies around Wellington and the subsequent thunder rumbled through the much of the night.

The storm knocked out electricity supply north of Upper Hutt and about 280 houses were without power on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, a 4.2 earthquake hit 5km north of Napier, at a depth of 12km, just before 3.40am, GeoNet says.

More than 350 people reported feeling the quake. Most felt it as a light shake but two said it was a strong jolt.

The Fire Service said no one had reported damage from either event.
