Johnathan Thurston has avoided NRL season-ending surgery on a shoulder injury suffered in Australia's Test win over New Zealand.

Scans confirmed the North Queensland skipper had sustained a shoulder issue but were cagey on how long they would be without their halfback.

"The injury does not require surgery, and it is not season-ending. Thurston will continue to be monitored and treated by the club's medical team," the club said on Monday.
