Tim Wilkinson qualifies for US Open

NZN 7/06/2016

New Zealand golfer Tim Wilkinson will contest his first major tournament next week after qualifying for the US Open.

Needing a top-four finish at a two-round sectional qualifier in Florida, Wilkinson finished second outright.

Resuming his second round on five-under after it was halted midway through by bad weather on Monday, Wilkinson picked up two more shots to card a 68.

It followed a 69 in his first round to leave him seven-under at Timuquana Country Club, two strokes behind Australian winner Aron Price and one clear of five other golfers, all from the United States.

Left-hander Wilkinson will join fellow-PGA Tour regular Danny Lee at the US Open, which begins at Pennsylvania's Oakmont Country Club on June 16.
