Toddler shooting accused to be named

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/10/2016

A man charged over the fatal shooting of a two-year-old girl in south Auckland will be named next week.

The 26-year-old was charged with manslaughter and unlawful possession of a pistol after a toddler was found dead with a gunshot wound at a home on Favona Road in Mangere Bridge on June 2.

At a hearing at the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday, his lawyer Sam Fernando, opposed the man being publicly named, saying the victim's family could face alienation as a result.

But Justice Graham Lang said there wasn't a strong enough argument to keep the accused's identity secret.

He gave the child's family until next Wednesday to notify those necessary before the suppression on the man's name will be lifted.

The accused earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges and another of possession of a cannabis plant for supply and will appear again in court in November.

A three-week trial has been set down for May next year.
