Two people have been arrested after a Gisborne service station was robbed by a man armed with a tomahawk.

A police dog tracked the pair down after the Mobil Portside on Wainui Road was hit early on Tuesday, police say.

Earlier, a man entered the service station with a tomahawk and demanded money and cigarettes, while a second offender kept watch outside.

Both men fled on foot with a sum of money.

The pair will appear in Gisborne District Court on aggravated robbery charges.
