Wellington Phoenix face a tough opening match in the A-League's knockout FFA Cup after drawing last year's grand final runners-up Western Sydney Wanderers.

The round of 32 match is scheduled for August 2 at Campbelltown Stadium in Sydney, with Wanderers likely to showcase an array of new signings including former Roar central midfielder Steven Lustica, Spanish central defender Aritz Borda and Uruguayan midfielder Bruno Pinatares.

The Phoenix have yet to complete their roster, and are still missing two key defenders as well as a marksman up front after Blake Powell's recent release from his contract for family reasons.

But former Melbourne Victory pair Kosta Barbarouses and Gui Finkler should be ready to show their wares after a solid training block with their new club.

Wellington still have fond memories of their 5-2 demolition of Wanderers back in February, but Western Sydney came out on top 2-0 when the two teams last met in April.

The Phoenix won their opening match in last season's FFA Cup, accounting for Central Coast Mariners 1-0 in Gosford before falling 5-1 against Melbourne City in the round of 16.
