Associate Tourism Minister Paula Bennett says there's been a big push to attract visitors around this time of year, known as the shoulder season, and 87,552 arrived during May.

"To see this kind of growth in visitors in the last month of autumn shows our focus is paying off," she said.

"A large part of Tourism New Zealand's campaign targets groups such as skiers, cyclists and golfers, who may want to visit outside the summer season."
