A German tourist crossed paths with a grumpy resident seal in the Abel Tasman National Park and did not manage to make a friend.

The 18-year-old was rescued by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter after he was attacked by the locals in the water, receiving 'nasty bite wounds' to both lower legs.

A DOC ranger assessed him and called for help when the man managed to scramble out of the water.

He was airlifted back to Nelson Hospital Emergency Department.

This was one of five calls in just 24 hours for the helicopter, indicating the start of the busy holiday season. Other calls included rescuing an injured tramper from the Heaphy track and three medical-related calls to Blenheim, Riwaka and Murchison.
