Tourists attacked by hammer-wielding men

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/04/2016

Two Northland teenagers have been arrested for punching then robbing French tourists while armed with a hammer.

The foreign visitors were asleep in their van in Dargaville during the early hours of Sunday morning when they were woken up by the 18 and 19-year-old men who were carrying a hammer.

The teens demanded money before they both punched one of the tourists.

They took some money before running away.

But the police dog squad quickly tracked them down and they were arrested soon after.

Police have returned the money to the tourists who say they plan to continue their holiday.

The two teenagers will appear in Whangarei District Court on Monday on aggravated robbery and cannabis related charges.
