Tourists in trouble on Mt Taranaki

A rescue operation is underway to get three tourists stuck on Mt Taranaki.

A helicopter was sent after police were alerted just before 4.40pm on Sunday.

Weather in the area is clear.

The tourists were traversing a route called 'the policeman' on the eastern side of the mountain, which runs from the ski field to the summit.

The rescuers sent include three alpine cliff rescue specialists.

The trio will be taken Taranaki Base Hospital for medical attention. One of them is believed to have a broken arm.
