Toyota Launches 'Back To The Future'-Themed Ad Campaign

The Huffington Post The Huffington Post 14/10/2015 Joe Satran

The future is almost here -- the future, that is, to which Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled in 1989's "Back to the Future II." After taking a trip 30 years in the past in "Back to the Future," the two characters, played by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, use their souped-up DeLorean to vault forward to Oct. 21, 2015 -- one week from Wednesday.

Toyota made a video starring Fox and Lloyd to commemorate the occasion. The full five-minute version debuts on October 20, but in the above teaser, they discuss the predictions in "Back To The Future II" that have, and have not, come to fruition.

They note, for example, that 3D movies and fingerprint-scanning technology are now everyday phenomena, but that dog-walking robots still haven't been invented.

The videos aren't just for fun. They advertise Toyota's new Mirai sedan, which runs on a hydrogen-powered fuel cells. It's an appropriate pairing not only because a futuristic car is one of the de facto main characters of the "Back to the Future" series, but because futurists have long predicted that such fuel cells would someday replace internal combustion engines in cars. These fuel cells produce water as exhaust, so they could prove less environmentally harmful than conventional cars.
