Toyota recalling 1200 cars in NZ

NZN 29/06/2016

Nearly 1200 Toyota vehicles in New Zealand are part of a worldwide recall because of a possible airbag inflator defect.

The local office is recalling 2010-12 Lexus CT 200h models 2008-12 Toyota Prius models.

The air bag inflators could have a small crack in a weld, which could lead to the separation of the inflator chambers.

The air bag could partially inflate and the inflator could enter the vehicle interior, increasing the risk of injury, Toyota says.

In New Zealand 1162 vehicles are being recalled, part of the 1.43 million worldwide.

The company said it was not aware of any injuries or deaths related to the recall.

It is not related to last year's recall of 34 million vehicles with Takata airbags, where explosive airbags were blamed for at least five deaths in the United States.

Toyota said it would be contacting New Zealand owners and arranging for the free remedy, which should take between two and four hours.
