The young man was a student at Newcastle University but was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition after "consuming excessive amounts of alcohol".

Officers revealed the heart-breaking news this afternoon, saying the 20-year-old was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary at 5.45am on Tuesday and died on Wednesday.

A university spokesman said: "It is with deep sadness we can confirm the death of one of our students and our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

"The university's welfare services are offering support to any students or staff who may have been affected by the news.

"At the family's request, we have nothing further to add at this time."

The police said the investigation into the death had now been passed to the coroner.

News of the death comes as the London Ambulance Service started a campaign called 'Getting Drunk is Not a Game' - aimed at highlighting the dangers of excessive drinking at Christmas.

Alcohol-related calls are the most common need for an ambulance among 21-30 year olds across London.

Startling statistics from the emergency services show London Ambulance Service responded to over 6,000 alcohol-related incidents last December, making up seven per cent of all ambulance call outs for the month.
